The mostly dull, few years story of my ownership of a 1954 Austin A40 Somerset. From buying her on 25th Aug 2013 to selling her and her being taken away on 22nd April 2017. For my own interest, but probably much to the amusement of any long established Austin enthusiasts who stumble across this. And if reading my stories of joy (and woe) is any use to any newbie like me who is thinking of getting into something similar then that's a bonus.

And back home again!!
Turns out Amy has a very small petrol leak somewhere. Not enough to cause a visible sign, but being in a garage for a week the smell of petrol has built up. No time to investigate properly and fix it, so she is coming home tonight and back outside on the drive. The likelihood is that it is such a small issue that it needs no desperate attention whilst she's outside as it will just dissipate. Looks like it is the flexible braided hose between the tank and the feed pipe. But will try to confirm and fix it in Spring of course, in the meantime she's come home and been covered over with the replacement lightweight cover. Have to install some eyelets and tether it down the sides before high winds return. Which is next weekend by the looks of things. Saturday is looking ripe for a drive in the meantime!! Oh well, it was never going to last, I'd have got itchy feet anyway, so I have an excuse to keep her running about after all.

The ethanol content in modern petrols has a corrosive effect on old rubber and plastic components. Items made to give many years of reliable service are failing not because of age, but due to the ethanol in our petrol.
ReplyDeleteCheck out the modern ethanol resistant petrol pipe. Perhaps Frost.co.uk stock it? Besides, if you haven't already got one already then a Frost catalogue is a wonderful thing to have for all those classic car bits and bobs you never knew you needed until you saw them in the catalogue! :-)
