The mostly dull, few years story of my ownership of a 1954 Austin A40 Somerset. From buying her on 25th Aug 2013 to selling her and her being taken away on 22nd April 2017. For my own interest, but probably much to the amusement of any long established Austin enthusiasts who stumble across this. And if reading my stories of joy (and woe) is any use to any newbie like me who is thinking of getting into something similar then that's a bonus.

My MGB GT on this year's Calendar
Slightly off topic, but this was one of the root causes of me getting the Somerset. This year's March calendar shot on my wall was this MGB GT. Basically like the one I had. Same year. Same colour. Same wheels. Just can't quite tell if it has the same full length, pull back, Webasto sunroof!! But to all intents and purposes its the one that I had back in '89! The engine in the Somerset is the grandaddy of the engine in the MGB, not quite a B-Series.. but near enough!

Hello there Mike, just wanted to let you know that I am reading through your blog from the beginning with interest. I have been saving up specifically for a classic car since I started my paper round at the age of 13 - I am now 29, and still haven't bought one (work, house renovations, lack of garage, etc), but now I am finally in a position to seriously get a proper classic in my life.
ReplyDeleteI had always planned on buying a Triumph Vitesse for boring and pragmatic reasons, but just lately I have really been going off this idea, due to the fact that it is boring and pragmatic. My classic will be a play thing, not my daily driver, so it makes sense to go for something a little more interesting (although it does still need to fit in the garage). Enter A40 Somerset.
Anyway I am enjoying reading your blog so far, I happened to find it through random A40 Somerset searches. It gives me a good idea of what to ask about when viewing them, so already proving in invaluable for the newbie! Must admit I am a little bit worried about this head gasket issue that seems to crop up a lot. More research required I think.
Cheers,
Matt.
Thanks Matt. Yeah, the head gasket has been a pain, as you'll have read! I am assured by some of the longer establish Austin Counties club members that I meet that it is not a problem if it gets fixed "correctly". Just that doing things correctly doesn't come into it where I'm concerned :-) Good luck with your search.
DeleteHaha I'm sure you're being too hard on yourself. I will be sure to ask the head gasket question whenever I view one. Are you in any other clubs apart from ACCC? Also I think I read on one of your posts that you belting down the M4 near Reading - just wondered if you were local to me? I live near Camberley. Cheers, Matt.
ReplyDeleteYeah - Wokingham - small world, huh? The local ACCC meet is at the Swan in Ash Vale, so I guess I drive near by you on the way down through Frimley! Not a member of any other club though.
